18/01/2022 –Remembering and honoring our colleague Richard Saitz
With sadness, we are sharing the news that our colleague Dr. Rich Saitz passed away on January 15th from pancreatic cancer. Rich was an exceptional scientist and leader in our field, and a friend to many, and we will miss him greatly. He played key roles in shaping and contributing to INEBRIA 极速赛车开奖官网开奖记录 168极速赛车开奖官方开奖网, including as a member of the Coordinating Committee from Sept 2011 to Sept 2017 and as host of the annual conference in Boston, in 2011. He also was the driving force behind the annual publication of the INEBRIA 极速赛车开奖官网开奖记录 168极速赛车开奖官方开奖网 conference proceedings in Addiction Science & Clinical Practice since 2011 and he was also one of the INEBRIA 极速赛车开奖官网开奖记录 168极速赛车开奖官方开奖网 coordinating committee members that contributed actively to bridging the gap between cultures and expanding the SBIRT in Latin America.
Rich was unwavering in his commitment to science and to advancing evidence-based practices in substance use treatment and prevention. He challenged all of us to question accepted wisdom and take a clear-eyed view of the evidence as we strive to improve care and reduce stigma for people who use alcohol and drugs. Rich was an important mentor to so many around the world. He inspired many of us to enter the field, and all of us to do our best work – and to live fully and have some fun while we’re at it.
In his honor, INEBRIA 极速赛车开奖官网开奖记录 168极速赛车开奖官方开奖网 is inaugurating the Richard Saitz Outstanding Mentorship Award, which will be an annual award given during the INEBRIA 极速赛车开奖官网开奖记录 168极速赛车开奖官方开奖网 conference. The recipient will be supported to travel to the conference and give a plenary talk, and will be celebrated with a very special dinner with friends and colleagues. The first award will be given at this fall’s conference, and we will be sharing more information about it in the coming months.

21/11/2021 –Launch of Pahola
On November 19th, PAHO launched Pahola, a digital health worker who can help risky drinkers decrease their alcohol consumption. This tool is an effort to help countries in the region to reduce the increasing rates of harmful drinking.
Pahola is designed to be empathetic and free of judgement and can provide general information about the risks of drinking and communicate interactively and confidentially with people. She can help assess users’ alcohol-related risks using a series of questions. If people then decide to cut down on drinking, Pahola can help them create a plan that includes identifying triggers and figuring out how to cope with them. In addition, she can also refer people to alcohol treatment services. This is a great development in the area of screening and brief interventions, and we hope there will be opportunities for PAHO and INEBRIA 极速赛车开奖官网开奖记录 168极速赛车开奖官方开奖网 experts in the region to evaluate it.
In words of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), new technologies, including artificial intelligence, are powerful tools for expanding access to information and care. In addition, the PAHO Assistant Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa commented that PAHO’s goal with Pahola is to help people better understand the harms caused by alcohol consumption, increase access to reliable information, facilitate self-assessment of alcohol-related risks and take concrete steps to decrease alcohol use. In this sense, Pahola is not intended to replace direct contact with health professionals but aims to encourage people to seek help.
This tool is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

24/11/2020 Web based consultation on a working document for developing the global alcohol action plan
The Alcohol, Drugs and Addictive Behaviors Unit in WHO has finalized a working document for the development of an action plan (2022-2030) to effectively implement the WHO Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. This is done in accordance with our plans for implementation of WHO Executive Board decision EB146 (14): https://www.who.int/teams/mental-health-and-substance-use/alcohol-drugs-and-addictive-behaviours/alcohol/governance-alcohol/towards-and-action-plan-on-alcohol
We have now moved to the next stage of the process – a web-based consultation on the working document, which is available here: https://web-prod.who.int/publications-detail-redirect/action-plan-to-strengthen-implementation-of-the-global-strategy-to-reduce-the-harmful-use-of-alcohol
The consultation is now open and will remain open until midnight on 6th December 2020. Member States, governmental and intergovernmental organizations and non-State actors are invited to submit their comments through a dedicated web: https://extranet.who.int/dataformv3/index.php/151298. The consultation is not open to individuals.
The consultation asks one substantive question only: “We have read the working document for development of an action plan to strengthen implementation of the Global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol and have the following comments and suggestions for consideration:” You will then have the option to either submit the full response online or submit an abstract online and attach the full submission as a pdf or doc file.
The working document is in English only, but responses can be given in any of the six official languages of WHO: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese or Arabic. All relevant contributions received will be published on WHO`s website. Comments received will be taken into consideration in the process of developing the first draft of the action plan and may inform subsequent stages of the process.
If you have any question, please contact Dag Rekve, Senior technical officer at WHO, e-mail: rekved@who.int
